Rituals of Memory
In the article “Rituals of Memory” by Kimberly M. Blaeser, the author talks about culture and what defines us. The author compares our relationships to family, place, and community to her friend’s curly hair because of the looped relationships in our lives. Blaeser argues that our memories and storytelling are the things that define us. She states that we don’t come from one culture, but many, and sometimes those cultures don’t come together. One of her memories was when she went and honored fallen soldiers in the cemetery and the Indian burial ground to honor those warriors as well. Blaeser explains that this memory is important to her because it helps her balance when her mixed heritage seems to pull her in different directions. She also describes how her American Culture and Native American Culture impact her life. In the end, she states that her documents from her school life and memories from her native culture both define who she is.
